If the balance falls below this amount, the toll gate will not open, and the system will block the deduction. This move is aimed at reducing long queues and operational issues at toll plazas. Make sure your wallet always has sufficient funds before you hit the road.

2. Heavy Penalties for Inactive or Blacklisted Tags

If your FASTag is inactive, expired, or linked to a closed bank account, you will now be charged double the toll amount. While this rule existed earlier, it is now being enforced much more strictly. Also, no cash payments will be accepted at FASTag-only lanes under any circumstances, so keeping your tag in good condition is essential.

3. Auto-Recharge Made Mandatory for Fleet Operators

Commercial vehicle owners—especially buses, trucks, and taxis—must now activate auto-recharge for their FASTag accounts. This ensures that these high-frequency users do not cause traffic blocks due to insufficient balance. Auto-recharge can be enabled easily through the MyFASTag app or through your bank’s portal.

4. Repeat Offenders Will Be Flagged and Fined

Drivers who repeatedly try to cross toll plazas with invalid or low-balance FASTags will now be flagged in the system. Such behavior could lead to fines of up to ₹500 per attempt and even blacklisting of the FASTag, which would make the vehicle ineligible for FASTag lanes until resolved.

5. GPS-Based Tolling Pilot Launched

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched GPS-based tolling on selected routes. In this model, tolls are calculated based on the distance traveled instead of flat charges at specific plazas. While still in the trial stage, this system is expected to roll out in high-traffic areas by the end of 2025.
